Cirque du Soleil are experts when it comes to delighting audiences. Performing to over 100 million spectators, in 300 cities, across the five continents. In February 2016, Cirque du Soleil debut in Christchurch, presenting their acclaimed show Quidam. The Christchurch leg of the tour marked a significant milestone. After 19 years of touring, this was the end of the road for Quidam.
At Vbase we are in the business of memory making. With this milestone in our hands, we wanted to make sure the cast, crew and everyone who joined us, would walk away with memories that would stand the test of time.
The Horncastle Big Top
Quidam follows the journey of a young girl who escapes her dull existence into to a world of fantasy and imagination. Set on a stage that is a make-believe wonderland, the story's told through daring feats, acrobatics, and contortion.
Our aim was to transport the audience into the magic from the moment they walked through the front doors. We strung festoon lights and bunting from the concourse ceiling and transformed the snack menu so circus goers could enjoy childhood delights such as hot dogs and candy floss. A photo wall and dress up box were staged by the entrance so the Cirque du Soleil experience could be captured and shared.
Would you like Champagne with your Circus?
It’s not every day an international circus comes to town, so what better way to celebrate than with a glass of champagne? Better yet a whole marquee! Dimly lit and beautifully decorated, the Mumm Marquee was space deserving of everyone's glad rags. Those partial to the finer things in life were able to sip on Mumm champagne, nibble at antipasto platters while listening to live jazz. With a bathtub full of champagne, the Mumm Marquee was the perfect place to start the show in style.
We call Christchurch home for two weeks
With 13 shows over ten days, Christchurch became home away from home for 52 actors and all their production crew. We wanted each and every member of the Quidam family to feel like they could call Christchurch home.
We greeted everyone with a hand written card on arrival and geared them with a map of the city's hot spots. We even introduced them to the quintessential kiwi spread Marmite!
Cirque du Soleil was one of the most successful events in Vbase's history with 50,000 ticketholders through the doors. Originally scheduled for seven shows, an extra six shows were add due to demand. 20% of people who joined in the magic came from outside Canterbury to attend. And the best news is they might be coming back… Watch this space!
