Meetings about Meetings
- 04 June 2019
As the meetings & events, exhibition and travel incentive sector (MICE) gathered in Auckland to meet about meetings, the interest in Christchurch Town Hall and its flexibility for all manner of events has only increased.
Organised by Conventions and Incentives New Zealand (CINZ), MEETINGS is the annual tradeshow for the business events industry to share knowledge and ideas and discuss new business opportunities across the country. This year attracted over 650 exhibitors and buyers from throughout the wider Asia-Pacific region.
Sarah Jane Cave, Vbase Business Development Manager said the two days were really busy but rewarding. “In addition to the prescheduled appointments we were able to engage with numerous casual buyers, many of which were specifically interested in the return of Christchurch Town Hall”.
After an extensive rebuild and restoration project, the world-class performance venue offers multiple options for conferencing, gala dinners and special events. Two purpose-built theatres hosting up to 2,250, and three versatile rooms holding up to 500, are modernised throughout combining integrated technology with iconic heritage features and an unrivalled backdrop for your event.
Chris Wallace, Vbase General Manager Projects, says the improvements made to the James Hay Theatre will make it a more suitable venue for a range of events. “We’re hoping we’ll be able to attract everything from rock bands and jazz musicians to plenary sessions and gala events.” he says.
The focus was further enhanced by Vbase being able to host both pre and post MEETINGS famils in the venue. Organised by Tourism New Zealand Business Events, the pre MEETINGS famil welcomed a group of key event visitors from South East Asia treating them to breakfast with a view in the Avon Room. The post MEETINGS famil was made up of key Australian contacts, invited by CINZ, and hosted to an outstanding lunch by Vbase in the Limes Room, in conjunction with Christchurch NZ. Both famils were able to have a full venue tour.
Sarah Jane Cave says event bookings for the rest of the calendar year are really encouraging with spaces filling up fast in the versatile venue. “With the addition of the James Hay Theatre now also in the mix, we’re expecting these numbers to grow again, and we’re excited to see the variety of events we can bring into the central city.”
